Home Repair Guides

Home Repair books and home repair guides can be a source of all your home repair answers. Are you interested in possibly making that home repair yourself? You have waited long enough and are a bit hesitant to call a handy man or repair man. Does the possibility of spending hundreds if not thousands of dollars keep you from hiring a repair man to fix your home repair?
Have you considered tackling your diy home repair project yourself. Why not ? You may even like it and want to take on a few more home repairs. One way you can receive the guidance needed from start to finish for your home repair is to purchase a well rounded home repair guide. There are many well written home repair guides available to choose from.
What makes a well rounded DIY home repair guide? First, go to the table of contents and look for the subject headings. You want to see subjects covered such as electrical, plumbing, drywall, HVAC heating and cooling, roofing, siding, appliance repair, flooring just to name a few. The more subjects covered, the better.
Another thing that makes a well written home repair guide is lots of pictures. Pictures can really help you through the repair. Using the pictures can act as a reference and if you get to a sticky point, refer to the pictures to help you along.
Rather than purchase a home repair guide that covers many subjects, you can look for target specific books such as home repair books that target only electrical repairs or drywall repairs or even plumbing and tiling repairs. In books like these, you will usually find more information on that subject. They tend to cover more repairs for that subject.

HOW TO REMOVE YOUR OLD KITCHEN SINK

Are you going to try to install a kitchen sink? Installing your sink could be easy, but simply like the majority of DIY projects throughout the home, it may well be challenging according to the age of our old sink.

LET'S CHANGE THE EXISTING SINK
The time has come, Let's get rid of the old sink and get this project moving. Reach under the sink and turn off the water shutoff valves. Turn them to the closed position. Once you are done, turn on the water and see if the water is completely shut off. Sometimes the shut offs don't stop the water completely. If this is the case, just go to the basement and turn the water main off. At this point we are ready to move forward.

Now that the water is off, disconnect the water feeds that connect the shutoffs to the faucet. A pair of channel lock pliers or an adjustable wrench should do the trick.  Next, disconnect the trap by loosening the 2 nuts attached. That is all it took to disconnect the plumbing.
Now we need to disconnect the actual sink from the countertop. This is easily done by removing the lock nuts just below the actual sink. Usually this can be accomplished with a  Phillips head screwdriver. When all the locking nuts are loose, from above the sink, pull the sink up and out of the sink well which is the opening that is cut into the countertop. Something else I would like to point out is that the sink never easily pops out like this. Since the sink will be discarded, don't be afraid to give it a few shots with your hammer from underneath. If it is an old sink, it was probably glued down so you will need to break the seal that was created between the sink and the actual countertop.
CHANGE SINK
Now that the old sink is out, reinstalling the new sink is the reverse process. When installing the new sink, attach the new faucet to the new sink BEFORE you install the sink into the countertop. You can even attach the water feeds to the faucet. It's a lot easier than trying to reach up into the cabinet. Once the sink is resting in place, install the locking nuts, connect the trap and water feeds. Turn the water on and test the plumbing. What I like to do is first do a quick test by running the water for about 10 seconds. As this is happening, I look under at the piping to view for any dripping. If all is good, I will put the water stopper into place, fill the sink up half way then remove the water stopper. This will give the drain a solid rush of water through the trap. If the pipes aren't sealed properly, it will show up now and I will be able to see where the drip is coming from. If there is a drip, just tighten at the source of the leak and retest.

HOME REMODELING TIPS: Keeping Your Home Clean During Renovation

REMODEL
RENOVATION
HOME IMPROVEMENT

You are just about to start your Home Improvement project. Your remodeling contractor notified you that the work will start soon. Are you prepared for the work to begin on your home addition, room addition, raised level also commonly called an Add a Level or even a kitchen renovation or bathroom renovation?

TIPS TO KEEP YOUR HOME CLEAN DURING CONSTRUCTION

Before your home improvement contractor begins remodeling, you want to make sure you have your home all set for the dust and contaminants that flow through the air. Get yourself ready by setting up the proper shielding in order to protect and minimize any potential hazards that lie ahead.
Setting up barriers and applying protective shields also helps minimize cleanup after your remodeling is completed.

WHAT PART OF YOUR HOME NEEDS PROTECTION?

First off, figure out what part of your home will be affected by your remodeling project. If your are installing an addition in the rear of the home, then you are actually lucky. You can prepare only a small portion of your home which means less work for you.

ARE YOU BUILDING A RAISED LEVEL?

RAISED LEVELLet's say you are remodeling your home and installing a new raised level or add a level. Many times this type of remodel project involves opening and removing walls on the 1st floor. Even installing new a new staircase is common so in this type of situation, the work will be spread out all around the interior of your home. That means obviously there is more to protect and cover.
As a NJ Home Improvement Contractor specializing in home additions, room additions, raised levels and complete home renovations, I have showed up to my customers homes on day one only to find absolutely nothing protected. Other times, the home is protected from top to bottom.
Here are some tips to get your home prepared for the remodeling job ahead....

REMODELING: Protect the floors

If your home improvement project is going to affect most of your home, obviously you would want to remove as much of the contents as possible if not all of it. Many workers will be walking throughout your home. The very first thing you want to do is protect your floors. Floor protection can be achieved by applying surface shields. For rugs, you can apply a plastic roll out that has a one sided adhesive. Some of these plastic sheet protectors will last 30 - 45 days. For hardwood, you can apply similar plastic barriers but these will be a bit thicker with a slight cushion to then. Again, these will have a one sided adhesive. Many of these roll out plastic protectors can be used on tile floors as well. Once finished, they can easily be removed and discarded.

MULTI USE SURFACE SHIELDS

Use surface shields for your carpet, linoleum, tile....
Any area that you will need to protect.

PROTECT YOUR COUNTER TOPS

Don't forget to protect your stone counter tops. Both in the kitchen and the bathrooms.

REMODEL: Protect Protect Protect

Here's a great tip for you.
If you are going to have traffic near your bathrooms, kitchens, or even on your deck, make sure you cover and protect it properly. For all of the above there are specific shields for each task need to protect.
Let's take the counter top's in either the kitchen, bathroom or both. You would want to install appropriate surface shield's offering protection especially on marble and granite countertops.
For your bathroom's, purchase tub liner's so they will cushion any item's that may fall and chip the enamel.

NJ HOME IMPROVEMENT CONTRACTOR: Protect large areas

If you have large areas of tile, carpet, hardwood flooring, wood or composite decks or even a lemonade porch, there are other ways to protect these areas. Purchase and install into place protective sheeting. One great product to use is Ramboard. Ramboard is light and easy to roll out and place down. I use these many times when we are working at a site that has an existing deck, hardwood floors, tile floors, and cabinetry....etc.. We lay the protective Ramboard material down until the job is complete, then remove them. They can absorb a heavy impact well. Ramboard sheets can also protect doors, cabinet, walls and furniture.

NJ HOME IMPROVEMENT CONTRACTOR: Install barriers

One of the best ways to protect your home improvement, whether it's a room addition, kitchen renovation or even a bathroom renovation is to install plastic barriers. A plastic barrier is a temporary wall made of plastic. Just recently, tools were made that make this a whole lot easier such as a zip wall. In minutes, you can create a barrier from floor to ceiling.
On great way to use this system is to put all your belongings such as furniture into a room that isn't going to be used. Install the barrier around the furniture, encasing it in plastic. If you need to access the furniture, you can install a zip- zipper attachment to the plastic wall. when you need access, just unzip and go.
You can also use a barrier to block off one part of your home from the other. Works great especially for additions, home additions, raised levels and bathroom renovation remodeling projects.
