Do you want to learn how to tile? Have a home improvement tiling project that you want to do but you are unsure where you should start? Tiling can be intimidating to say the least. Here I will provide some tips on how to get started and get your tiling project under way.
TILING FOR YOU
Have you been considering installing tile in your home or apartment. Want to tile your kitchen backsplash or install tiling on your bathroom floor? Actually, tiling is very easy to apply and install.
As a NJ Home Improvement Contractor for over 30 years, I have installed tiling in thousands of projects in and around Bergen County NJ. If you have no experience and want to install floor tile, ceramic tiles, wall tile or any other type of tiling for a tiling project, start by getting a "How To Tile Book". Applying the tile is fairly standard. Wall tiles are applied one way and floor tiles are applied another. Once you learn the two systems, they are fairly consistent pending the type of tile material you use such as ceramic, marble, porcelain or even granite or slate. For arguments sake and the content of this article, we will stick to the basic ceramic tile for a kitchen backsplash as we move forward.
BASIC TILING TOOLS
After you get your how to tiling book, you will find that various tools are needed for your tiling project. The standard tools would be a wet saw, grinder, trowel. If you plan on completing a few tiling projects then you may want to purchase a basic wet saw. A snap dry cutting saw can be used also and is half the price. Both can be purchased for under $80. Your other basic tiling tools can also be purchased for under $40 together.
Once you determine what you want to tile, estimate the square footage of the area you are going to be tiling. That is simply achieved by multiplying the length by the width and you will get your square foot allotment. Figure slightly more for waste. If you are purchasing the tile from a local supplier, then leave the excess off, you can always go back for more.
Make sure to purchase to appropriate amount of grout. Pending if you are installing floor tile or wall tile, the grout you use will be determined upon this factor. Inform your supplier as to which application it will be for so you get the appropriate type.
A tiling professional will not start tiling until he determines his starting point. When you look for a "How To" tiling book, make sure it explains how to determine tiling quantities and starting points in detail. Also, get a book that show many pictures detailing each step as you progress. This will be helpful and informative.
BUY A TILING BOOK
You may want to purchase a tiling book that only pertains to the type of tiling project you want to achieve. For example, if you are going to tile a backsplash, purchase a book explaining only that subject. If you are going to tile a floor, get a book explaining how to tile flooring. This way you will have more of your questions answered prior to starting your tiling project. If you purchase a tiling book that discusses many types of tiling projects, there may be less detail on what you are looking for because they are only touching on the subject.
